In Switzerland, reconciling work and family life is a huge challenge. The numbers speak for themselves: more than 50,000 Swiss mothers would like to return to work. However, companies make it difficult for them to re-enter the labour market: conditions are difficult, there are few opportunities with real responsibility, and the prospects for the future are often lacking. In this way, a lot of professional potential is lost, along with a great deal of money. This situation is estimated to cost the Swiss economy more than 5.5 billion francs. Employers need to take a different approach. As a state-owned company, SBB recognises its opportunity to position itself as a modern and innovative enterprise. In addition to introducing family-friendly working conditions, SBB is launching the “Back to Business” programme – a set of initiatives designed to empower Swiss mothers to return to work. In an appeal to the internal workforce conducted on a large scale, children of SBB employees were invited to a painting workshop (at the Aargauer Kunsthaus) that would allow them to paint portraits of their mums and dads at work under artistic guidance. Combined with an appropriate headline, the portrait series is used in an online and offline campaign that is rolled out on a broad basis. On February 9th 2014, 50.3% of the Swiss voters expressed their desire to limit and regulate the so called 'mass immigration'. This decision attempts to abolish the bilateral agreements, established in 1999 between Switzerland and the EU, which lead to the opening of the borders and defined the rules for free movement of persons and workers. In the eyes of Europe and of the entire world, this extreme, narrow-minded and hard decision darkens and blurs the idea of an international, open-minded and Human Rights promoting Switzerland. The Other Half is the 49.7 percent who are now ashamed of their country and who wish it to be known for its openness, generosity and creativity. Because creativity gives birth to new ideas, new schemes and new solutions.

The new service by ibis Switzerland. Millennials rarely experience anything without documenting it using their smartphones these days. The rule seems to be that if you didn’t post it, it didn’t happen, and that can be stressful – particularly when you’re on vacation. A study published in The Independent revealed that up to 40% of vacationers choose their destination based on how Instagrammable it is. In fact, such are the stresses of social media that many people will go on a full-blown digital detox when on vacation. Swiss professional skier Lara Gut even decided to delete all her social media accounts recently to devote more time to other pursuits. The “Relax we post” service, developed for ibis Switzerland by Jung von Matt/Limmat, offers vacationers the chance to truly get away from it all. The concept sees hotel guests put their Instagram accounts in the hands of experienced influencers, leaving them completely free to enjoy the city. Starting this weekend, the service will be introduced in Zurich and Geneva for a trial period of one month.
