Launched in five languages globally, the Word Debt platform is linked to Facebook and Twitter and notifies users how many words from their social media posts are of Greek origin. The platform provides users with the original Greek word and gives them the option to donate 0.10€ per word to “The Smile of the Child”, the largest Greek Non-Governmental Organization committed to improving the welfare of children who are, according to Costas Yannopoulos, President of the BoD of “The Smile of the Child”, “the most innocent and vulnerable victims of the economic and migration crises in the country." How do instill the idea amongst web surfing and content sharing adults (aged 3254) that real social connections and moments happen between friends and family over a Mott¹s Clamato Caesar (an easy drinking Canadian cocktail that's a combination of tomato juice, clam juice, vodka and spices)? The answer: hijack the online social networking phenomenon currently sweeping the globe, and twist. Introducing the Lamato Network. The real social, social network. Designed specifically with the 30+ crowd in mind, the Lamato Network's taken the best components of other more established online social networking sites Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. and enhanced them to their maximum social potential. Digital Sweatshops (‘Click Farms’) are used by brands, bands and even the US Government to fraudulently increase their social media profile with paid Views, Likes and Followers. And like traditional sweatshops, employees are forced to work long hours, for very little money, in appalling conditions. To reach out directly to these workers and offer assistance, we created a series of Facebook, Instagram and YouTube video messages in targeted local languages. Each message directed viewers to a mobile Labourlink helpline where workers could anonymously report abuse, discrimination and poor conditions to Asia Monitor Resource Centre, an independent NGO that advocates and lobbies businesses and governments to improve worker’s rights and conditions. We then paid digital sweatshops to View, Like and Follow the messages, thereby using their very own service to directly inform workers of their rights and improve their conditions. Every dollar invested into the campaign reached thousands of click farm workers, with our message reaching over 175 000 click farm workers in the first week alone.
