Every year, New York City becomes the center of the holiday season, with tourists from around the world traveling in to witness its magic and festive traditions firsthand. With the season looking different this year, and many staying local, Pepsi wants to do something extra special for the City’s very own and very deserving group – its bodega owners. For New Yorkers, bodegas are 24/7 landmarks of each neighborhood and in 2020, owners rose to the task of staying open and keeping the city going during a critical time. Pepsi, with the help of Bronx natives Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, is dropping its newest holiday campaign to spotlight, give back to, and thank bodegas for their commitment and the essential service they provide across the five boroughs.

Research showed that only 9% of Golden Chick customers were first timers – meaning trial was successful at creating loyalty. And no wonder – Golden Chick’s superior quality in the QSR chicken category was obvious, as one of the few brands growing in a competitive market. To keep growth on the climb, we knew we needed to generate more trial. What better way to do that than to capture real, authentic reactions to those first-bite moments? So we took to the Golden Chick trailer to streets to sample real menu items for real people, and the results were pretty darn tasty. Portrait of a Dreamer is the story of Fidencio Fifeld-Perez, an undocumented artist who comes to the US at age seven. Fidencio documents his journey to America though papal picados (Mexican papercutting) made of maps. Through this medium, he completes the iconic George Washington Athenaeum portrait on the dollar bill with a road map from Mexico to the United States. In his words: “I think about the parallel of the portrait and of America representing the journey that all of us are still in... and by choosing to add another material to this portrait, I see it as an act of freedom.” Film advertisement created by TBD, United States for Welcoming America, within the category: Public Interest, NGO.

We took a computer vision and pattern recognition algorithm developed at Cornell University, and trained it to recognize our company logo using Machine Learning techniques based on computational neural networks. (Honestly, we thought that to be better use of an algorithm than teaching it to recognize a cat.) Then, having taught it to find our logo, we ran the algorithm backwards while showing it images of trees and snowflakes. So what's an algorithm to do if it's being run backwards while shown pictures of trees, when all it really knows how to do is recognize a company's logo? Well, being an uncomplaining machine, it does its best to find that logo. And when it doesn't find it, it tries to put one there: it starts seeing logos where there aren't any. From that chaos, the machine creates this trippy, mesmerizing effect. An entirely new art form waiting to be experimented with. Looking forward to 2017, we marvel at how newer technologies continue to transform our wonderful business, and how we will adapt and use them commercially for the benefit of our clients, and their brands.
