Growing up, we listened to many fairy tales. Then, as adults, we told those tales to our own kids. And without realizing, we taught them unequal gender roles by doing so. Snow White was given an apple by a witch and waited helplessly for a prince’s kiss to save her. Cinderella suffered for a long long time and the only way out was a prince’s affection. Red Riding Hood was naive enough to believe the wolf and ended up being eaten. Can’t we have different tales? Maybe “fair” tales? Can there be princesses with fierce courage and wits to match and princes who have golden hearts? Do stepmoms always have to be wicked? Do princesses have to wait for the princes for their salvation? Is bringing salvation the only duty of princes? If we change gender roles in fairy tales, the unequal roles in society will change as well. We believe in an equal future and thus present Fair Tales.
