Social protection is a set of risk-sharing policies that governments create to protect their citizens. These policies help prevent people from falling into poverty and create better chances for economic growth for everyone. In other words, they’re social safety nets. In the US, we have Social Security, welfare, Medicaid, and other programs. The problem is, these programs rely on employers to set aside money from people’s paychecks. That worked great when Grandpa worked his entire life at one company, but in today’s world—not so much. People are driving Uber, working at Task Rabbit and freelancing in the “gig economy.” Without a traditional employer/employee relationship, it’s complicated to manage and collect funds for the greater good of all. In the developing world, traditional social protection systems were created based on policies in wealthy countries. We all know things are very different in the third world, where informal work is prevalent. Over time, it became clear that developing countries needed new policies to match the working cultures there. So in a weird twist, developed and developing nations are becoming more alike in terms of how people work. Add in climate change, technological disruption, and political turmoil, and you suddenly have 100-year-old policies that are a mismatch for how things work today. That’s why the World Bank Group is urging countries to modernize their policy. As a studio, our goal was simple: to make the best damn video ever created about social protection and risk-sharing policy. From a creative approach, we wanted to do something exciting and fresh. After exploring 10 or so concepts, we went with the idea of comparing and contrasting the developed world with the developing world. To represent the developing world, we created a moto-trailer, and an Uber driver represents the developed world. We then imagined a scene where they race and dodge policy books falling around. We love these types of projects because they require focus, understanding, and a lot of critical thinking. The material is dense, and it’s challenging to distill the messages from a 150-page technical white paper into a short video. We knew this would be an opportunity to play a role in helping a large group of people. If we’re successful in changing the policy in one country, our work could positively affect the lives of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. And that’s something we’re passionate about. Going to the emergency room isn't fun. It's even less fun a few weeks later when you get the bill. Surprising charges. Costly fees. Insurance copays. Premier ER & Urgent Care believes patients should be treated with respect, and pricing should be fair and honest. To drive that point home, they turned to Bandolier Media to create a series of spots highlighting the cavalier (and often predatory) ways the other hospitals and urgent care centers think about cost. It’s a little known fact that the U.S. is made up of more water than land. In fact, America’s oceans cover nearly 4.5 million square miles, which is about 20% greater than U.S. landmass. The Surfrider Foundation’s USOA flag design is an artistic emblem that represents the nation’s connection to the land and sea. The international design and consulting firm IDEO reached out to BIEN from their San Francisco office with a challenging project: help them create a marketing video for the launch of Shape, their new collaboration product. IDEO is working to solve huge global challenges, so they wanted the Shape video to reflect their current initiatives–the future of automobility. To highlight how Shape works, we used the story of Ari and how she used a proven framework to solicit ideas, gather feedback and foster close collaboration among a group of enterprise peers. In the end, Ari’s team comes up with some cool—and some wacky—ideas that could one day solve all of our mobility and traffic issues. Ari is able to quickly solicit feedback on the ideas, iterate and eventually develop a final prototype. BIEN was responsible for creative direction and animation, working hand in hand with the IDEO team and their illustration partner Cassandra Fontaine to create a unique video featuring an original music score by the talented Kevin Boenzli. The guiding strategy was to create something you’ve never seen or heard before. We didn’t want to create just another explainer style video. As a production partner, we were involved early on, shaping the overall direction and style of the video and offering visual solutions on the fly throughout the process to address client feedback. For animation, we used a variety of techniques – cel animation for the characters and 2D motion graphics for everything else. This allowed us to add some quirk and nuance to the star of the show, Ari, while keeping the budget within reasonable limits. This project required us to animate low riders, mech suits, drones and flying cars. So yeah, we had a great time doing it! We were able to use Shape to organize this project and we highly recommend you giving it a try. Learn more at IDEO.com. With the rise of access to information came the rise of disinformation. What you may not know is most of this disinformation came from one place: Velez, Macedonia. They’ve spread hundreds of lies affected a national election, manipulated thousands of people. And no one has done anything to stop them… So we The Times, the only newspaper that can be quoted in the court of law, decided to take matters into our own hands: By suing Velez. We brought them to court, citing The Defamation Act 2013. As the only newspaper that can be quoted in the court, we believe it is our duty to know times and more importantly, fight for it. And that means holding liars accountable. Direct advertisement created by Miami Ad School, United States for The Times, within the category: Media.

This was a particularly challenging brief. The film is a very emotional watch and it would have been very easy to make it feel like it was going to be hard work to get through it. So we had to balance story, truth, emotion, flair, glamour and abuse and package it in such a way as to let people understand there were going to be tough moments, but there was also a lot of life, personality and comedy too. On top of all that there was the potential issue of putting core Judy Garland fans off because it was going to be Renée singing. Having her sing and being confident enough to show and hear it were essential to making the teaser a huge success.
