Against a backdrop of nuclear programs, forced labor camps, and an infamous, brutal dictator, thousands of North Koreans make their escape. Their stories go largely untold – a cause that people across the globe could actually affect. So, we needed a new way to break through all of the noise coming out of North Korea – a way that flips the script and gets people talking about the North Korean refugee crisis. So, we enlisted the help of the glorious leader himself, Kim Jong-Un. Kim Jong-Un took to major job search sites and announced unlimited job openings in North Korea – job openings that anyone in the world could apply for. In case anyone doubted Kim, we populated his LinkedIn profile to include achievements like his sanctioned nuclear plants and child labor programs and also a commercial for his recruitment campaign. For his cabinet, Kim got on Twitter and hand-selected his picks – picks like Leonardo DiCaprio as the Minister of Environment. But, in the end, every applicant was actually redirected to a landing page for Liberty in North Korea, a non-profit aimed at helping North Korean refugees. LinkedIn shut down the campaign after seven days. But, in those seven days, donations to LiNK were up 427% with new visitors contributing 42% of the total. Over 50 news outlets picked up the story further expanding our reach. Best of all, we did it with virtually no spent media. Advertising agency barrettSF and the Studio have branched into the book business with “The Pumpkin and the Pantsuit,” a children’s storybook that is available on Amazon for $12 and at independent booksellers in select markets. Amazon is also the publisher. All proceeds will go to the Children’s Defense Fund. A true story and cautionary tale of two big personalities who run against each other for the highest public office in the land (Spoiler Alert! The bullying Pumpkin wins) and the different ways they go about competing for the same prize. “On election night, Van Jones posed the question, ‘how do we explain this election to our kids?’ That resonated with us. The goal of this book is to teach kids (and remind the rest of us) that losing is only losing if you give up,” said Todd Eisner, co-author and creative director at barrettSF. The story is brought to life by the STUDIO, a New York-based visual communications company. Their vivid illustrations include caricatures of the 2016 presidential candidates and some of their most ardent celebrity supporters. Donald Trump is portrayed as a bloated orange pumpkin head with angry yellow straw projecting from its pate and brows. Hillary Clinton is represented by a powder-blue pantsuit. In a sport where 27% of players are Hispanic, but few Latino fans are passionate about the game, MLB’s “Ponle Acento” (Put An Accent On It) campaign drove Hispanic players to embrace their heritage by adding accents to the names on their jerseys. This inspiring call to action was then adopted by US Hispanics at large, as they too joined this initiative to leave their mark both on and off the field. Soon the idea became a cultural movement that celebrities and fans joined by the millions, changing America’s pastime forever. Children of Labor is a stop-motion PSA geared towards the children of labor across the globe. In our execution, we experimented with stop-motion animation and cel animation. We believe it would be appropriate to construct our set out of white foam core to match the cold, winter mood with added high contrast lighting. The narrative for this animation involves a young child working in a clothing factory in the middle of a city. The child has been working long hours and is at a bus stop waiting to get home. Eventually, a school bus comes to save the child from the destructive work environment. The bus symbolizes a hopeful future for the child. A future that involves an education.
