In 2017, fentanyl claimed the lives of over 1400 people in B.C. In 2018, 81% of overdose deaths involved fentanyl. It’s becoming more and more evident that this is not just an issue that effects heavy drug users, with traces of fentanyl being found in drugs popular amongst teenagers like Molly, Cocaine, and counterfeit prescription drugs, like Xanax. The Vancouver Police Department partnered with TAXI Vancouver to create a fentanyl awareness campaign to show teens that they’re gambling with their lives when they take drugs. ‘Flirting With Death’ came from the insight that there is no way to know what’s in the drugs they’re taking, regardless of how invincible they think they are. Equinor, a Norwegian company has plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight by October 2019. The chance of an oil spill is extremely high. The disaster would affect the whole coast from South Australia to New South Wales, taking decades to recover. We created a bottle collection preserving the last oil-free ocean water from South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. If drilling proceeds, these water samples may be the only proof of our Great Australian Bight’s rare and complex ecosystem. We aim to secure a Unesco World Heritage listing before drilling commences in October 2019. The Great Australian Bight is eligible to become part of the list: (vii) for containing superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance; (UNESCO World Heritage List Criteria) Our next step is to contact the state government about preparing a Commonwealth proposal for the World Heritage list.
