Equinor, a Norwegian company has plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight by October 2019. The chance of an oil spill is extremely high. The disaster would affect the whole coast from South Australia to New South Wales, taking decades to recover. We created a bottle collection preserving the last oil-free ocean water from South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. If drilling proceeds, these water samples may be the only proof of our Great Australian Bight’s rare and complex ecosystem. We aim to secure a Unesco World Heritage listing before drilling commences in October 2019. The Great Australian Bight is eligible to become part of the list: (vii) for containing superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance; (UNESCO World Heritage List Criteria) Our next step is to contact the state government about preparing a Commonwealth proposal for the World Heritage list.
