The international design and consulting firm IDEO reached out to BIEN from their San Francisco office with a challenging project: help them create a marketing video for the launch of Shape, their new collaboration product. IDEO is working to solve huge global challenges, so they wanted the Shape video to reflect their current initiatives–the future of automobility. To highlight how Shape works, we used the story of Ari and how she used a proven framework to solicit ideas, gather feedback and foster close collaboration among a group of enterprise peers. In the end, Ari’s team comes up with some cool—and some wacky—ideas that could one day solve all of our mobility and traffic issues. Ari is able to quickly solicit feedback on the ideas, iterate and eventually develop a final prototype. BIEN was responsible for creative direction and animation, working hand in hand with the IDEO team and their illustration partner Cassandra Fontaine to create a unique video featuring an original music score by the talented Kevin Boenzli. The guiding strategy was to create something you’ve never seen or heard before. We didn’t want to create just another explainer style video. As a production partner, we were involved early on, shaping the overall direction and style of the video and offering visual solutions on the fly throughout the process to address client feedback. For animation, we used a variety of techniques – cel animation for the characters and 2D motion graphics for everything else. This allowed us to add some quirk and nuance to the star of the show, Ari, while keeping the budget within reasonable limits. This project required us to animate low riders, mech suits, drones and flying cars. So yeah, we had a great time doing it! With solutions for today’s challenges in traffic, energy, safety and more, IBM is striving towards a ‘Smarter Planet’. A vision that goes beyond a mere business proposition. IBM wanted to get this vision across in the Netherlands. But due to a limited communications budget IBM doesn’t use mass media. So how do you tell that IBM’s Smarter Planet vision is about working on new solutions to make our world better? We needed to communicate the message that IBM strives for a Smarter Planet in a simple and compelling way. Not by telling, but by experiencing. Building a Smarter Planet starts with challenging the status quo. Thinking in an unrestricted way about what can be improved. Like children do. They come up with surprising questions and original ideas. So to come up with smarter solutions, you have to think as free as children do. We wanted people to experience the effect of this fresh way of thinking. For this real life experiment we started asking children for smart ideas. Then we chose one of the ideas and executed it. The kid’s idea was to make street crossings safer by making the zebra crossing light up when you walk on it. We built one in the busiest street of Rotterdam and watched what happened. The unique execution with the flashing zebra crossing caught the attention of the public. In combination with the billboard explaining the kid’s idea, it made people realize anything can happen if you challenge the status quo. The billboard directed people to IBM’s Smarter Planet website to see more smart solutions that kids came up with. People reacted positively surprised. It made them realize we can make the world a bit better with smart solutions. And that’s exactly what IBM wanted to convey. Dagger's new work for United Way of Greater Atlanta's "Silence The Growl" campaign was a result of winning a creative hackathon. Atlanta's creative community turned out for a 1-day event to help increase awareness of the nearly 350,000 kids in Greater Atlanta facing hunger, especially out-of-school times like summer and school breaks when they go without the free and reduced-priced meals at school. The winning concept from Dagger integrated a mix of heart-warming UGC content (provided by Jukin Media,) music and animation to highlight the side effects of hunger, as well as the potential of what kids can achieve when NOT hungry.
