For the launch of the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, we decided to play a little joke by creating the ‘world’s first A.I. comedian’—or so people thought. Refuge is marking 50 years of fighting domestic abuse in a new campaign created by BBH, which highlights the insidious ways technology is being used by abusers to monitor and control their partners, and how this makes the charity’s job more complex than ever. At the heart of the campaign is a 40-second film which, at first glance, appears to be promoting a new smartphone. But as the camera lingers on its elegant design and a voiceover details its features, things take a sinister turn. Maps in real time, we are told, can “keep you up to date with traffic in your area… and her movements”, while smart home features can be used to adjust the heating and lights “even when you’re not at home, so you can control her from wherever you are”. It ends by reminding us that as domestic abuse gets smarter, the job of Refuge gets harder, along with details of how to make a donation. When creating an advertising concept it often starts with a piece of paper and a pencil. With a good concept the idea comes to life and the magic starts. We used just basic tools for the animation, like paper, a pencil, a sharpener, an eraser, scissors, glue and a set square. When the sails of the Dutch windmill are turned, the whole scene comes to life. All elements pop up and the message ‘I WISH YOU CREATIVE HOLIDAYS’ appears. People can send the viral to their friends and can also download all graphics to get creative themselves. Panama Tourism Authority wanted to boost the number of visitors from the U.S. and Canada. So new work by global marketing agency VML creates a challenge for people wanting to get off the beaten path. VML enlisted well-known filmmaker Vincent Urban to help engage potential travelers by asking, "Are you a tourist…or a trailblazer?" Panama is for the latter.
